Superstrong and ultrashort laser device constructed by Chinese Academy of Sciences in Pudong Zhangjiang
Recently, it is announced, by Shanghai Institute of Optical Precision Machinery of Chinese academy of sciences, the antimatter successfully created by use of superstrong and ultrashort laser - ultrafast positron source, is also the antimatter successfully created by the scientists of our country by use of laser for the first time. Known from relevant authorities, Chinese academy of sciences is currently building a more powerful superstrong and ultrashort laser device in pudong Zhangjiang. With the aid of the construction of Zhangjiang comprehensive national center for science, in the period of 13th five year plan, Shanghai will go faster and further in frontier areas of science and technology.
Usually, in the elementary particles composing matter, electron is charged with negative electricity and proton with positive electricity. In the 30's of the last century, physicists discovered the electrons with positive charge for the first time, as the first step for human being to know antimatters. With the development of technology, scientists have artificially made antimatters by use of large Hadron Collider. Ma Yugang, the deputy director of Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, in an interview, that Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, this time, has made antimatters for the first time by use of superstrong and ultrashort laser, which is of an important significance to our country:
Superstrong and ultrashort laser can mainly be used to manufacture positrons which are catchable. The test of this time made in Shanghai Institute of Optics And Fine Mechanics is to hit to the inside of material by gamma ray, so as to translate into positive-negative electron pair, which, with the energy of gamma rays, will turn into a positron and a negatron, so that positron can be observed.
Ma Yugang said that due to the extremely huge energy able to be released when antimatters annihilate, therefore, artificially making antimatters can lay basic condition for further use of antimatters for the deep research in next step:
Theoretically, the energy of antimatters is indeed extremely huge. Antimatters and positive matters are directly annihilated because of their contrary charges so that the mass of matters will turn into energy by100%. The energy of one gram of antimatters is equivalent to ninety trillion Joules, 2 billion times higher than the energy released by burning one gram of gasoline.
While in a short term, this huge energy is unable to be used in human science and technology, but a crack on the door to future has been opened. Ma Yugang said that scientists are exploring the use of more sophisticated equipment to observe and produce more high-level antimatters:
For some of the heavier, such as antiproton and antideuterium and antinucleus, generally, it is required to be realized by use of heavy ion accelerator with higher energy. When heavy nuclei collided with nuclei, positive nuclei and negative nuclei are produced, so, in this way, we can produce new antimatters.
